Neumann Steel
With exploding workforce numbers and spreadsheet based HR processes, Neumann Steel were in serious need of a comprehensive and scalable HR solution.
Neumann Steel, a leading Australian steel reinforcing company, found themselves facing a brewing HR challenge in the midst of a significant growth spurt. With their headquarters based in Currumbin, Queensland, and multiple branch locations across Australia, their diverse workforce had ballooned to over 310 employees and was becoming unwieldy to manage.
The challenges
As the company scaled, so did the complexity of their HR processes. Neumann Steel was relying on spreadsheets to manage the majority of their HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, employee records, and performance management. They also sought a better way to manage a diverse set of employee types and roles.
On top of thankless manual admin, Neumann Steel’s HR Advisor Ellie Hutton tells us that rapid growth was an inescapable factor in taking up ELMO.
“We went through a significant growth period over the last two or three years. We were sitting at about 200 employees and now we’ve really jumped over that 300 mark, which has just exacerbated the amount of work that we need to do within the HR team.”
To sharpen the need for a comprehensive HRIS even more, Ellie tells us that they were facing complex onboarding and recruitment processes, limited performance management and reporting capabilities, and the ever growing need to manage qualifications and compliance requirements.
“We’re quite heavily regulated in terms of meeting certain standards, this includes quality, but much of it is employee related. IWe also have to navigate the difference between an office space role as opposed to a factory position and understand how we can effectively manage processes and protocols, but with completely different groups of people.”
The solution
To conquer mounting challenges, Ellie and Neumann Steel implemented a suite of ELMO Software solutions in early 2024.
Ellie tells us that “we’ve been seeking approval to introduce a HRIS for a couple of years and about 12-18 months ago were given the green light to move forward.”
Gaining executive buy-in was an absolute must, and as Ellie says, she needed to ensure they were getting a system that granted them rich “reporting and analytics functions so we could provide the executive team with high level snapshots of different areas across our employees.”
To satisfy all of their requirements and set themselves up for continued growth, Neumann Steel decided upon HR Core, Recruitment, Onboarding, Analytics, Performance Management, and Learning.
Armed with a full quiver of HR tools, Ellie has been on a mission to set up new processes and put ELMO to work. She also had some advice for those on a similar implementation journey.
“I would absolutely tell others to take their time with the implementation and make sure you fully understand each module before moving to the next. ELMO’s flexibility allows you to scale at your own pace, and it’s worth investing the time to get it right.”
The benefits
Since implementing ELMO, Neumann Steel has seen significant boosts to their operational efficiency, major process improvements, and a fresh ability to report to management at the drop of a hat.
Not to mention, Ellie has cut down on her manual busy work “by at least half”, leaving her with more time for strategic tasks that demand her personal attention.
One of the starkest improvements for Ellie has been the visibility afforded by their new HR platform.
“Having that dashboard function, where we can break down new starters, terminations, role changes, and salary changes is fantastic. Whereas, before, we had this massive tracking spreadsheet that we manually updated. Now it’s all there, we just process it once.”
Another improvement that caught Ellie’s attention is the speed and automation of their new onboarding workflows.
“Our onboarding workflows are so much better, and what I’ve also learned is that it’s not just for onboarding, I’ve been able to create multi-department workflows for off-boarding. So that’s definitely being a game changer for us, especially onboarding for someone new. It’s just all automated, it’s amazing.”
Looking ahead, Neumann Steel is now in the process of expanding their use of ELMO’s performance management tools and continuing to refine their onboarding workflows. Ellie and the HR team are also beginning to explore some of the more advanced features, such as performance reviews and KPI tracking, to further improve their employee experience and operational efficiency.
Ellie tells us that she’s now undoubtedly better equipped to handle the workload that comes with a complex and growing company, all while improving reporting, increasing visibility, and ensuring compliance.
